AromaStoic Living: Live in Accordance with Nature

In Stoic philosophy, the phrase “live in accordance with nature” doesn’t refer to hiking barefoot through the bush. It speaks to a deeper truth: that human nature is defined by our ability to think clearly, act with integrity, live in community, and take responsibility for our choices.

To the Stoics, our highest purpose is to grow into the best version of ourselves by cultivating virtue — which they saw as the true measure of a good life. Wealth, comfort, achievement, or recognition have value, yes… but they are not the good. Virtue is.

When we layer this ancient wisdom with AromaStoic practices such as sensory rituals, essential oils, breathwork, mindful anchoring, and small daily reflections, it becomes something beautifully practical.

Below are powerful ways to introduce the Four Cardinal Virtues through an AromaStoic lens.
1. Wisdom — Seeing Clearly, Choosing Well
Wisdom is the ability to make sound decisions based on reason, truth, and perspective. It is the discernment to pause before reacting, to step back from emotion, and to choose what is right rather than what is easy.

AromaStoic practice:
• Oil pairing: Frankincense or Clary Sage — oils that encourage clarity, grounded insight, and a calmer inner landscape.
• Ritual: Apply a drop to your palms, inhale deeply, then journal one simple question:
“What is the wisest choice I can make right now?”

2. Courage — The Quiet Strength to Do What’s Right
Courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it. It is found in hard conversations, in setting boundaries, in taking responsibility, and in rising each time life knocks you down.

AromaStoic practice:
• Oil pairing: Brave (from Kids Collection), Black Spruce, or Peppermint.
• Ritual: Roll over the heart space, breathe into the ribs, and anchor with this affirmation:
“I can do hard things with a steady heart.”

3. Justice — Living Fairly, Honourably, and Compassionately
Justice is about how we show up in the world. It is fairness, kindness, integrity, and the willingness to consider others’ needs as well as our own. It is acting in ways that strengthen community.

AromaStoic practice:
• Oil pairing: Balance, Lavender Peace, or Bergamot — oils that create emotional harmony and heart-centric openness.
• Ritual: Diffuse your chosen oil and reflect:
“How can I bring more fairness, kindness, or honesty into my interactions today?”

4. Temperance — The Art of Moderation and Self-Mastery
Temperance is the ability to regulate impulses, practise self-control, and honour what is enough. It is the antidote to overwhelm, excess, reactivity, and emotion-led decision-making.

AromaStoic practice:
• Oil pairing: Digestzen, Lemon, or Lavender Peace — oils that support calm, simplicity, and emotional balance.
• Ritual: Create a ‘moderation moment’ by applying your oil of choice, closing your eyes, and asking:
“What would the balanced version of me choose?”

Why This Matters
When we live in alignment with our inner nature (our reason, compassion, courage, and sense of what is right), life becomes less chaotic and more meaningful. We stop being thrown around by emotions, other people’s expectations, or the stress of the moment. We anchor into something deeper.
The Stoics teach us that we cannot always control life, but we can always control our character.

AromaStoic practices give us a tangible way to do this to help us return to ourselves, return to virtue, and return to the person we want to be.

My Next Life

I often say I’ve had many incarnations within this single lifetime. We don’t only get reborn when we leave this world — we reinvent ourselves
