Nearly 18 years ago, I was watching Oprah and she was sharing an amazing book called Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach.
Early in the book, Sarah shares the benefits of a Gratitude Journal by explaining that we can have a deep appreciation for everything in our lives and in fact draw towards us further abundance when we take the time to really look and notice the beauty and bursting abundance all around us. I wasn’t in a great position at the time. I was a very young Mum with 2 little ones under 3 and I wasn’t very happy in my relationship. So off I went to purchase a beautiful journal and the perfect pen and I began to document 5 things each and every day that I was grateful for.7 days later, my Husband left me and I found myself having to live by myself for the first time in my life as well as solo parent 2 very small children.
During the following weeks and months, I did not fall apart, like I thought I would and I know 100% it was because I continued to always, without fail, write down all that I was grateful for.
Instead of feeling sorry for myself and being bitter about the situation I found myself in, I noticed the abundance in my life. My eyes were open to all that I had, not what my life was lacking and I knew that I was blessed.
I know, that because I was able to have deep gratitude, it was possible to manifest more abundance into my life.
It was the Law of Attraction in action.
The Gratitude Journal was life-changing for me. It shifted my perception and changed my feelings from fear and lack to appreciation and wealth. Material wealth, spiritual wealth and emotional wealth.
Today I created a new Gratitude Journal to continue acknowledging all the blessings in my life right now.
If you would like to acknowledge the abundance that you have right now in your life, you may like to create a Gratitude Journal. Below are my top 9 tips for seeing the simple abundance in your life and manifesting more through gratitude.
1 ~ Use a journal that speaks to you.
Choosing a journal with conscious intent is important. When you choose something that you absolutely love, you are choosing to reflect your authentic self. You are reflecting your truth. You may like to think about whether you prefer lines or blank pages (I like lines). Do you like a soft or hard cover? What size to you prefer? Do you like a book mark? Maybe you enjoy a leather bound journal or maybe you would prefer to create your journal in electronic form. The only thing that matters, is that you really enjoy and love your journal. After all it will be the record keeper of your heart.
2 ~ Express yourself and get creative.
Don’t stop at words to reflect your gratitude. If you feel drawn to draw go right ahead. Doodle, draw, paint, collage, stick in pictures, cuttings from magazines, feathers or other objects that reflect your daily gratitude.
3 ~ Create a ritual.
If you can’t carve out the time, don’t worry too much, but if you can spend a few minutes each day, creating a small ritual around writing in your journal this adds to the magick that you are creating and helps to channel your focus. Lighting a small candle before beginning your daily reflection creates a lovely feeling of magickal intent.
4 ~ Start with 5.
Start with listing a minimum of 5 things that you are grateful for each day. But don’t stop, if the gratitude is flowing. In numerology, the number 5 can represent the heart center, so I feel that listing at least 5 reflections of gratitude is perfect.
5 ~ Pick your time, or don’t.
I prefer to write in my Gratitude Journal at the end of the day. This is because I have spent the day that has been, being open and receptive to noticing all that is abundant in my daily life. I also find that, due to having a very busy house, the evenings is the time when I have space to be quiet. You may prefer the mornings, or during the day to write down you list. Or, you may like to write them down as you notice them, spacing the journalling out over the entire day. Go with your own flow here.
6 ~ Believe in your own words.
Try to move past writing things without experiencing the gratitude, because you just need to list 5 things. Aim to really focus on reflecting and believing in the words that you write. Now, there may be days when you only manage a very basic list. I’ve had days where I only managed to list things like food, water, shelter and my family and that is perfectly fine as long as you feel the gratitude in these things as you list them. Words are powerful and you have the power to manifest in your life, that which you wish to create. When you truly believe in the words that you write, you can make powerful magick.
7 ~ Expand on the basics.
When you feel you are able to, try to expand on your short list and be a little more specific about your gratitude. For instant you may be grateful that you have a job you enjoy. You may choose to expand on that such as “I am grateful that I have a job that I enjoy. I love meeting wonderful people each day. It makes me feel valued and that I contribute to my community”.
Expanding on the basics creates more of an emotional response when we reflect back on our gratitude and therefore increases the energy, both projected outwards and returned.
8 ~ Write only with positive intent.
Remember that this is a Gratitude Journal and is a reflection off the abundance in your daily life. Keep it positive and you will witness the flow of positive energy that returns to you.
9 ~ Keep going.
Stick with it. As with anything it takes a little while to create a habit. I know that after a short while, writing in your Gratitude Journal will become an important part of your day.
